For some people, a vacation is a time to relax; for others, it’s a time to get their bodies moving while exploring the natural wonders the world has to offer. If you fall into the latter group, check out some of these destinations for your favorite adventure holiday yet!

The Great Outdoors in Ashland & Flagstaff

If being out in nature is your idea of a great vacation, Ashland fits the bill thanks to Crater Lake National Park. The Cascade Mountains surround the ancient volcanic crater, which is filled with deep blue water. A trip to this national park means variety: from rushing rivers to deep canyons and vast pine and hemlock forests to wide lava beds. To make the most of your time in Ashland, check out the Lithia Springs Resort. It features mineral springs and flower gardens in a beautiful setting in the valley between the Cascade and Siskiyou Mountains.

Similarly, Flagstaff is home to one of the world’s largest pine forests and offers year-round adventure activities, from hiking and mountain biking to boating and rock climbing. If you’re making the trek to the Grand Canyon State’s major attraction, Flagstaff makes a great pit stop for breaking up your journey. Pack your trekking gear and you’ll find a spot in Glen Canyon Recreation Area where you’ll feel right at home boating, swimming, or fishing.

Biking, Wining & Dining in Sacramento

Thanks to its flat terrain and well-managed trails, Sacramento is a perfect area for cyclists. A favorite is the American River Bike Trail. Running from downtown Sacramento to Folsom, you have 23 miles of river and wildlife to explore. You’re right to work up an appetite in this city, considered the farm-to-fork capital of the United States. Reserve a table at one of the city’s favorites like The Red Rabbit or Biba, or head down to Clarksburg for a picnic and wine tasting at one of their ten local wineries.

Extreme Sports in Colorado Springs

Whether it’s waterskiing, ice climbing, or four-wheeling, Colorado Springs‘ mild weather, sunny climate, and beautiful mountain views make for a great place to indulge in heart-pumping activities. Lakes and rivers that lead through canyons and gorges offer miles of thrilling water sports in the summer. In the winter time, check out the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. From here you have gorgeous mountain vistas and a short drive to Pikes Peaks skiing, climbing, and mountaineering.

Surfing in Wailea, Maui

Wailea is more popular for its luxurious hotels and beaches but the adventurous traveller can make this a time to brush up on their surfing skills. Take a lesson with a local surf school and they’ll have you riding the waves in no time. When the conditions don’t allow you to hang-ten, you can opt to snorkel or go scuba diving to see some of the island’s fascinating underwater creatures. If you want a place to stay where you are near the surf beach and bathed in luxury, check out the Grand Wailea or the Makena Beach and Golf Resort.
